According to technology forecasts presented by IDC Spain at the end of last year, sustainability is taking on a huge role in the digitisation of businesses. It is estimated that by 2024, 80% of Forbes Global 2000 companies will comprehensively record their energy consumption data and report their carbon footprint using quantifiable metrics. This would represent a remarkable rate of growth compared to the 50% that is currently the case.

By 2027, the same analysts predict that ESG performance will be considered one of the top three factors in IT equipment investment decisions, with more than 50% of RFPs including metrics relating to carbon emissions and materials use. Fortunately, for some time now, environmental concerns in data centre design have been on the rise, so much so that all the major public cloud providers have launched initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint. This undoubtedly facilitates the task of organisations that have sustainability goals at the top of their agenda.

Proof of this is the Climate Neutral Data Centre Pact, signed by Europe's leading data centre operators, which sets efficiency and renewable energy targets and ambitious goals for 2030. These include measures such as consuming 100% carbon-free energy, prioritising water conservation, reusing and repairing servers, implementing systems to recycle heat, and, of course, testing energy efficiency with measurable targets.

The decisive role of the ICT departments

It is IT managers who are leading the way in this commitment to sustainability and who are key to investing in carbon reduction initiatives, adopting measures and monitoring solutions already available on the market to achieve this.

And the trend is clear: by next year, IDC analysts have predicted that a quarter of organisations worldwide will demonstrate responsible leadership by increasing their spending on sustainability-related digital technology by more than 25% over 2022 levels.
